Most esteemed Judges:

Lately the years have taken an interesting turn of events,  in most cases it has been for the better. Times in which I did not care too much about my future and the impact I would have never seemed to bother me. It was as if I was fine to live a mediocre life, I had even said that after high school, I would just work two minimum wage jobs, live silently, and call it good. However, I have learned the importance of my education, thankfully, and realized that in order to make a difference in the world, there needs to be studies to back it up. In recent years, I have come across movements of eco living and being eco friendly, movements which I have come to support to aid the betterment for our planet. These movements include things like going vegetarian then vegan,  growing my own food, and giving old clothing a new life. While these are not all of the movements out there, these are just some of the easier movements I could do when I was just starting out. Then as I entered high school, I decided in my freshman year that my senior project would be the creation of a camper in which I would in for the rest of my life. In doing so, I would be learning to live without the need of material goods, fast fashion, and processed food that are very damaging to not only myself, but the environment as well.

In relation to my senior project, I decide to take classes that would help me on my journey to being eco friendly. For example, I took Introduction to Engineering and Design (IED) and Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) I and II to help build my knowledge of construction to build a stable camper. Not only do I love the ability to design unique buildings, but I am also able to take what I know and apply it to real world in matters such as homeless shelters. This allows me to appreciate the house that I have grown up in and the costs my mother has had to pay. I have since been taking the final level of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (III), and hope continue to take classes at Western Nevada College in the future. Another class I took was Culinary Arts and while I am able to cook for myself, I feel it is necessary to learn how to cook dishes to not only learn how to incorporate all parts of nutrition for a cheap but balanced diet, but also how to rely on myself for making food rather than processed packaged fast food chains. This also helps me in appreciating the work behind the preparation of food as it allows me to be more self aware of all the labor that many go through in the harvest. Overall, I would have to say that I am eager to continue in hope of learning more ways I can give back to the people and the Earth. I have taken the Jump Start program as a means of getting ahead of my education so I can start my career earlier which will allow me to never lose determination of my goals due to financial issues. Thank you for your kindness and giving me your time.

Sincerely,

Annette-Karissa Avila
